Abstract

1415656 Control systems for consuming apparatus; such as AC motors GEC-ELLIOTT AUTOMATION Ltd 2 Feb 1973 [2 Feb 1972] 4842/72 Headings H2H and H2J A system for supplying power to a load 1 from an A.C. source 2, 3 comprises a triac T1 which is controlled so as to provide at least two power pulses in each half cycle of the A.C. supply thereby suppressing certain of the harmonics which appear in the voltage applied to the load. A firing control circuit 4 produces a gating pulse which is applied to the gate of the triac T1 to render it conductive to produce of current pulse in the load 1 which may be a capacitor start split-phase induction motor. At the same . time a capacitor C1 charges by way of the triac T1 and a resistor R1. A further pulse from the circuit 4 renders a second triac T2 conductive whereupon the capacitor Cl commutates the triac T1 to its non-conductive state to end the current pulse in the load 1. The point X now rises to a voltage determined by a clamp circuit comprising a diode bridge and a capacitor C2 which enables the capacitor C1 to recharge to a polarity opposite to its original charge. Later in the half cycle a second pulse is applied to the gate of triac T1 to render it conductive and initiate a second current pulse in the load 1 and at the same time the capacitor C1 commutates triac T2 off. The second pulse in the load may terminate at the end of the half cycle of the A.C. supply or it may be terminated by forced commutation. As shown in Fig. 3, if the two load current pulses are of equal width and sym- metrically disposed in the half cycle the third harmonic associated with the pulses cancel. If more than two current pulses are formed in a half cycle other harmonics than the third are suppressed. The amplitude of the fundamental component of the load voltage may be varied by control of the pulse width.
