Abstract
1415534 Protective apparatus B G WAURICK & ASSOCIATES PTY Ltd 30 Nov 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 55459/72 Heading H2H Apparatus for preventing damage to electrical circuit elements by high voltage surges which occur when circuit breakers are opened after a fault occurs comprises the parallel combination of a negative coefficient voltage dependent resistor and a surge arrestor. A three phase star connected alternator 7 having an earthed neutral is connected to a power supply system by way of a circuit breaker 6. Each of the phase lines is connected to the earthed neutral by means of a parallel connected combination of a negative coefficient voltage dependent resistor 2 and a surge arrestor device 3. If a phase to earth fault occurs in the system beyond the circuit breaker 6, the circuit breaker will open and a high voltage will be developed at the alternator terminals due to the inductances in the circuit elements. This high voltage will cause the arrestor devices 3 to respond and dissipate the excess voltages should the voltage dependent resistors 2 be insufficient to dissipate such voltages. The parallel combination of the devices 2, 3 may also be connected between phases to protect the system from phase-tophase faults. The elements 2, 3 may be encapsulated in a body of epoxy resin and provided with terminals 4, 5. A second embodiment is described for use with a system without an earthed neutral.
