Abstract

1415417 Shaped hydrotreating catalyst AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 12 Oct 1973 47899/73 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions C4 and C5] A catalyst for use in hydrotreating petroleum distillates comprises porous, but non-hollow; particles having a polylobal cross-sectional shape characterised by a concavity index greater than 1.0, a void fraction of 0.25 to 0.60, a ratio of geometric volume to geometric surface in the range 0.001 to 0.042 inch, a catalytic surface area greater than 100 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a catalytic pore volume of 0.35 to 0.65 cc/g which results from a major portion of pores of diameter 40 to 90Š when measured with mercury up to 50000 psi abs. and a contact angle of 140‹, and when containing more than two lobes at least 15% of the points within the particles are greater than 0.015 inch from the particle surface and a composition cmprising a major portion by weight of alumina, 5 to 25% molybdenum oxide and 1-8% of cobalt and/or nickel oxides. In examples catalyst particles are formed by extruding alumina powder which has been moistened with aqueous ammonium molybdate and cobalt nitrate in "dumbell" or "3 leaf clover" cross sections and presulphiding. The catalyst particles can also have cross sections corresponding to a Figure of eight and tetralobal rods.
