Abstract

1415108 Purifying hydrocarbons INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 16 Nov 1973 [16 Nov 1972 29 Nov 1972 26 Feb 1973] 53431/73 Heading C5E Aromatic hydrocarbons and/or organic sulphur compounds are removed from hydrocarbon mixtures by adsorption on a macroporous ion-exchange resin containing less than 2 wt. per cent water and containing ammonium, hydrazinium or substituted ammonium cations. The feedstocks treated are gasoline, white spirit, a toluene-containing C 8 paraffinic and naphthenic fraction, a mixture of heptane and benzene and a 250-350‹ C. boiling range fraction. In examples the resins used have sulphonic groups and have been exchanged with ammonium, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine or dimethylamine ions and are compared with resins exchanged with K<SP>+</SP>, Na<SP>+</SP>, Ba<SP>++</SP>, Fe<SP>++</SP> and Cr<SP>+++</SP> ions. After use, the resin can be regenerated by contacting with a gaseous or liquid elution agent, such as ammonia or a saturated hydrocarbon of different boiling range from the adsorbed components. The feed 1 can be contacted with the resin in a column C 1 to form a stream 3 containing unadsorbed components which is distilled at C 3 to separate elution agent 6 and the unadsorbed components 7. The resin in C 1 is regenerated by passing an elution agent through this column to desorb impurities as a stream 12 which is separated at C 4 into elution agent 17 and the impurities 14. Two or more columns C 1 and C 2 of resin alternate in adsorption and regeneration stages with purge material being recycled from one column to another via the lines 2 and 8 respectively.
