Abstract

1414964 Inorganic dispersions ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 17 Jan 1973 [19 Oct 1971] 48642/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A process for deflocculating a particulate material comprises adding to a slurry thereof a copolymer or a water-soluble derivative of a copolymer having a number average M. wt. from 700 to 10,000 which contains 30-95 molar per cent of a unit of formula where R is H, C 1-3 alkyl, -COOH, -COOC 1-3 alkyl and R is H or C 1-3 alkyl, and from 70-5 molar per cent of a second unit of formula where R<SP>11</SP> is H or C 1-3 alkyl and R<SP>111</SP> is Cl, a C 1-3 alkyl carboxylic ester (-OCOAlk) or a C 1-3 carboxylate (-COOAlk). Examples describe the deflocculation of aqueous slurries of kaolinitic clay, chalk whiting and calcite marble using sodium salts of vinyl acetate-acrylic acid, vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride, vinyl acetatemethacrylic acid and vinyl chloride-acrylic acid copolymers.
