Abstract

1414674 Fuel injection pumps ROTO DIESEL 14 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 57797/72 Heading F1A In a rotary distributer fuel injection pump having plungers 16 reciprocated in a transverse bore 15 in a rotary member 11, the outward excursions of the plungers being determined by the abutment of roller shoes 17 with the ends 28 of a stop in the form of a leaf spring 26 fixed to the member 11, the engaging portions of the shoes 17 and the ends 28 are shaped such that a given relative axial movement therebetween, e.g. at start-up, causes an increase in the permitted excursions and thus excess fuel delivery. The engaging surfaces of the shoes 17 and the ends 28 are provided with a series of complementary teeth and recesses. In the excess fuel delivery position shown, the teeth enter the recesses. After start-up the delivery pressure of a feed pump 12 increases and displaces a piston 36. This causes pivoting of a spring-loaded latch member 35 to a position in which it allows springs 33 axially to move a disc 31, rods 30, channel members 29 and the shoes seating in the latter. Before start-up the shoes are moved into the excess fuel position (shown) by a member 37 or a centrifugal governor 41 controlling a throttle 25 between the feed pump 12 and an inlet passage 24. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown) the shoes are loaded by a spring (43) to the excess fuel position, fluid operated pistons 44 being provided for overcoming the spring (43) and thereby reducing the permitted excursions of the pistons 16 after start-up. Further movement of the pistons 44 displaces the shoes against the combined action of the spring (43) and a further spring (46), the shoes then co-operating with contoured stops which determine the maximum fuel delivery during normal operation. By providing the shoes in an element (50) slidable in oblique slots (52) in the distributer 11, axial movement of the element (50) changes the timing as well as the outward excursions of the pistons.
