Abstract

1414618 Creating special atmospheres in furnaces ACTRIC Ltd 16 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49855/71 Heading F4B A protective atmosphere is produced in a furnace by a heating tube 11 in the furnace chamber, in which fuel is burned in air, the heat generated being radiated to the chamber wall and workpieces in the chamber, exhaust gases being conveyed by an outlet duct 14 from the heating tube to a heat exchanger 15 in which the gases are cooled to remove water by condensation, the de-watered gases being conveyed into the furnace chamber to act as a protective atmosphere. The heating tube and/or surrounding tube 21 may contain nickel which acts as a catalyst for the reactions taking place therein. Additional fuel may be added to the returning gases at 19, a reaction taking place in the heated channel 21 to produce the desired protective atmosphere. Similar apparatus may be used for producing a protective atmosphere for other uses, e.g. for filling the tanks of an oil tanker when the cargo is discharged to prevent risk of fire. In this case the heating tube is placed either inside or outside a heating chamber which receives a fluid to be heated, e.g. the water which has already been used for cooling in the heat exchanger. Fuel gas is added to the dewatered exhaust gases as before to react by contact with the hot surface of the heating tube as before to produce the desired protective atmosphere.
