Abstract
1414577 Natural gas substitute WHESSOE Ltd 5 Feb 1974 [7 Feb 1973] 6052/73 Heading C5E A natural gas substitute is prepared by (a) catalytically steam reforming naphtha to form a gas mixture comprising CO, CO 2 , H 2 and CH 4 (b) subjecting said mixture to catalytic methanation and (c) downstream of the methanation, catalytically oxidizing H 2 in the gas in preference to CH 4 , at least part of the heat evolved therefrom being used in the overall process, CO 2 being removed by absorption at some point after the steam reforming. The gas mixture -may be cooled to condense out water and recover heat either downstream of the catalytic oxidation of H 2 when it follows immediately on the methanation or after methanation and before catalytic oxidation of the B 2 . The heat evolved in (c) may be used to raise high pressure steam, provide a final pre-heat of the boiler feed water or in an ancilliary duty, e.g. in the reboiler in the CO 2 removal step. Suitable catalysts for (e) are Pt, Pd, CuO or nickel subsulphide.
