Abstract
1414286 Nuclear power plant A P PEDRICK 13 March 1974 11218/74 Heading G6C In a nuclear power plant, should the reactor core 1 attain a state where its radioactive material might be released, the reactor is ejected, by explosive means, down a shaft 22 below the reactor, the shaft being such a depth that when it is sealed, there is no possibility of a dangerous amount of radiation reaching the surface. As shown, the plant consists of two turbines 3 driven by gas 2, carbon dioxide or helium, which circulates in a closed cycle between the turbines and the core. The core is ejected automatically by an explosive charge 20 acting on an ejector rod 18 when it reaches a dangerous state. When the core is at the bottom of the shaft, concrete blocks 26, 27 are provided to seal the shaft. In Fig. 2, not shown, the plant consists of turbines driven by steam generated in heat exchangers to which gas passes after being circulated through the core.
