Abstract

1413886 Coating uneven substrates; coating apparatus BAYER AG 9 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972 1 July 1972] 6556/73 Headings B2E and B2L A process of coating an uneven substrate with a surface layer by the reverse process comprises: producing a deformable, but hardenable surface layer on a support; pressing the layer onto the substrate while the layer is still deformable, uniform contact pressure being applied over the whole contact area where the pressure is being applied; hardening the layer; and removing the support. The substrate may be a sheet e.g. natural or simulated leather, wood, wool or other fleeces, woven or knitted fabrics or surfaces formed thereof, the simulated leather being p.v.c. foam, or p.v.c. or other polymer coated fabrics. The coating is preferably a polyurethane, many details of which are given, and may alternatively be p.v.c., polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, or acrylate copolymers. The coated support is preferably placed on a conveyor and the substrate is fed from an inclined plate under a brush roller. The brush roller has two helical rows of bristles extending in different direction from its centre and rotates in an opposite sense to the motion of the conveyor. A layer of paper between the. bristles and the substrate prevents the substrate being taken up on the brush roller but smooths out folds and removes air bubbles. Uniform pressure is provided by a tube roller comprising a tubular elastic impermeable tube and rigid gas-tight discs 2 supported on an axial shaft, the roller being partly filled with water to give an excess pressure of 0.1 to 10 atmospheres. Alternatively, the shaft may be hollow and formed with holes so that gas may enter the tube roller to provide the excess pressure.
