Abstract

1413884 Radiation-curable compositions containing ferromagnetic filler S SHIMADA T TAKAHASHI and M NISHIDA 30 Jan 1973 [30 Jan 1972] 4672/73 Heading C3P and C3G Compositions curable by high energy ionizing radiation and useful for forming plastics films comprise at least one monomeric or polymeric substance which is polymerisable (curable) by free radicals, and a filler at least a part of which is composed of a magnetized, powdery, ferromagnetic substance employed in an amount of 1À5 to 998 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the polymerizable substance(s). The magnetized ferromagnetic substance may be gamma-haematite, magnetite, superfine iron powder, spinel-type crystalline ferrite, magneto plumbite type crystalline ferrite, garnet type crystalline ferrite, pervovskite-type crystalline ferrite, inter-metallic compound magnet, singularly, binary or polynary oxide magnet, nitride magnet, phosphide magnet, carbide magnet or sulphide magnet. The curable substance used may be selected from resins containing polymerizable unsaturated groups, e.g. unsaturated polyesters, unsaturated acrylic resins or unsaturated alkyd resins; polyvinyl compounds obtained by reacting a polyfunctional compound (containing, e.g. hydroxy, isocyanate, epoxy or acid groups) and a co-reactive vinyl monomer; and compounds such as trimethylolpropane triacrylate or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Such curable substances (e.g. a styrene-(meth)- acrylate copolymer modified by reaction with tolylene diisocyanate and hydroxymethyl methacrylate to introduce unsaturated groups into the copolymer) may be used in admixture with other vinyl monomers, e.g. styrene and methyl methacrylate. The radiation used for curing the compositions may be, for example, α-rays, #-rays, γ-rays, X-rays or electron beams.
