1413794 Alkanolamine derivatives IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Nov 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 56208/71 Addition to 1078852 Heading C2C Compounds of the general formula (R<SP>1</SP> = alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or cycloalkyl radical each of up to 6 carbon atoms or phenylalkyl radical of up to 12 carbon atoms optionally orsubstituted by one or two halogen, alkyl or alkoxy radicals; R<SP>2</SP> = acyl radical of up to 10 carbon atoms; R<SP>3 </SP>= OH, NO 2 , alkoxy, alkenoxy or alkenyl radical each of up to 5 carbon atoms or aralkoxy radical of up to 10 carbon atoms) and their salts are prepared by (a) reacting a compound of the formula or metal salt thereof with XCH 2 NHR<SP>1</SP> (X = oxiranyl and/or CHOHCH 2 Y; Y = displaceable radical) or a compound of the formula (Z = H or protecting group), or salt thereof, (b) reacting a compound of the formula with R<SP>1</SP>Y, R<SP>4</SP>COR<SP>5</SP> (R<SP>4</SP> = H, Me or Et; R<SP>5</SP> = alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radial each of up to 5 carbon atoms, phenyl radical or phenylalkyl radical of up to 11 carbon atoms either of which may be optionally ar-substituted as indicated above) or a cycloalkanone of up to 6 carbon atoms, under reducing conditions in the case of the ketones or (c) reducing a compound of the formula optionally followed in each case by salt formation. The preparation of starting materials for process (b) is described.
