Abstract

1413625 Television ILLOCHROMA 31 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972 24 Jan 1973] 4806/73 Heading H4F A television system in which selected frames (or fields) of the video signal from a television camera are recorded on a magnetic tape by means of a rotating head assembly, wherein each selected frame is recorded after the tape has been advanced by one step by means of a step motor, the frame thus recorded with or without previously recorded frames then being played back and displayed on a monitor during periods when selected frames are not being recorded. In a first embodiment the multicolour printing of labels on a continuously moving web 1, Fig. 1, is monitored by stroboscopically illuninating periodically occurring labels by exciting lamp D in synchronism with the printing roller (Fig. 2, not shown) and with the television camera 4 frame scan sync. under the control of unit E, the video signal from each selected frame being magnetically recorded in unit B and subsequently repeatedly replayed and displayed on monitor C until the magnetic tape is advanced immediately prior to the recording of the next selected frame, this tape stepping being effected by an input control push-button unit F. In this manner each selected frame may be repeatedly observed immediately after being recorded as well as during recording, and in addition the recordings of all the selected frames are available for further examination. Two embodiments of unit E are described with reference to Figs. 4 and 6, not shown, and two embodiments of the record and playback unit B are described with reference to Figs. 5 and 7, not shown. Instead of manually selecting by unit F the desired frames to be monitored, periodic automatic selection may be effected under control of a clock and an automatic controller (Fig. 8, not shown). In a second embodiment, Fig. 9, not shown, X-ray analysis of a patient is periodically effected and recorded in the above manner for simultaneous repeated and subsequent observation. Instead of X-ray analysis, infra-red analysis may be similarly effected. In a third embodiment animated television shows are produced Fig. 10, not shown, by recording a first image in the video recording and playback device, displaying it on a monitor, drawing the second image on a transparent screen placed over the screen of the monitor during the playback and display of the first image, stepping the magnetic recording tape forward one step, televising and recording the drawn second image, displaying the played back second image on the monitor, and drawing the third image on the transparent screen (the second image having been deleted) &c.
