Abstract
1413520 Brake disc construction and mounting; cooling AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 56121/72 Heading F2E An annular fluid cooled disc for a vehicle disc brake projects radially outwardly from a part of a rotatable carrier which is spaced from one end of the carrier, and the disc has at least one radial passage formed therein, the or each radial passage being closed at its outer end and in communication at its inner end with a respective passage which extends through the carrier towards the above-mentioned carrier end, the or each respective passage being closed at its end remote from the disc; liquid in the or each respective passage flows towards the communicating radial passage during rotation of the carrier and disc. In Fig. 2, one of a series of radial passages 17 in a disc 14 in a spot-type disc brake communicates with a respective passage 18 in a tubular member 13, with which the disc is integral, secured by a radial flange 20 to the flange 24 of a wheel hub 10. Passage 18 is continued beyond the end of member 13 by a tube 29 extending through a ventilating aperture 30 in flange 24 and being supported at its other end, which is closed, on the hub 10. Annular cavities between thrust bearings 12 and member 13 and tubes 29 respectively thermally insulate the bearings. The tubular member 13 and the series of tubes 29 constitute the "rotatable carrier". Cooling liquid stored in radial passages 17 is vaporized by heat generated in the disc and the vapour is displaced inwardly by liquid flowing centrifugally outwardly; the vapour passing along respective passages 18 is condensed at the end where cooling fins 19 are provided. In Fig. 1, not shown, hub flange 24 and tube 29 are omitted: instead, member 13 (and passages 18) is continued to the end of hub 10 and has an integral inwardly-directed flange secured by bolts to the end of hub 10, and is in contact with the hub between bearings 12. In both cases wheel rim 21 is connected directly or indirectly to flange 20. In Fig. 3, a hollow disc 36 secured to projections 35 on a ring 34 welded to the prop shaft 31 of a vehicle transmission has spaced webs 40 and a peripheral ring 39 with a plugged aperture 44 through which cooling medium may be introduced. The "respective passages" are provided by the interiors of two cup-shaped sheet metal shrouds 43, whose side walls slope radially outwardly from the base adjacent bearing 32 to the disc 36. (See the lower part of Fig. 3 for communication between these passages and the disc interior). The prop shaft 31, ring 34, projections 35 and shrouds 43 constitute the "rotatable carrier".
