Abstract
1412937 Titanium dioxide gels; titanium carbide; lead zirconate titanate UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 49304/71 Headings C1A C1J and C1N An aqueous titanium (IV) gel is disclosed which has a H+/Ti molar ratio of at least 0À01, preferably at least 0À02, and which is dispersable in water to give a stable sol. at 3À5 M Ti concentration. The gel may be made by washing Ti(OH) 4 until the wash water has pH # 7 and specific conductivity of # 10<SP>4</SP> Ámhos, adding acid to bring pH to < 2À8, but preferably > 1À0, holding the slurry until sol. formation occurs and then removing water therefrom to form the gel. Alternately, an aqueous solution of a Ti salt, e.g. TiCl 4 may be contacted with a substance which removes anions so as to reduce the anion/Ti (IV) ratio to < 1 and then removing water from the resultant sol. The anion exchanger may be solid or liquid, e.g. a solution of a long chain aliphatic amine in 1,1,1-trichloroethane. The sols may be converted to the gel by evaporation, spray drying or dehydration in a lyophelic solvent, e.g. 2-ethylhexanol. The gel when redispersed forms a stable sol. which may be re-gelled into spherical particls of 4-2500 Á in size by dehydration in lyophilic solvent or chemical gelation. The gel particles may be calcined at 800-1000‹ C. to form TiO 2 spheres. Cubic TiC may be made by mixing the redispersed gel with finely divided C and a wetting agent, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, dehydrating the mixture and calcining, e.g. at 900-1500‹ C. in a fluidized bed. Pb 0À9 La 0À1 Zr 0À634 Ti 0À341 O 3À0 is produced in Example 8 by mixing the redispersed gel with a solution containing Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , La(NO 3 ) 3 . 6H 2 O and ZrO 2 and adding to 1,1,1-trichloroethane solvent containing a surfactant. The gelled particles were filtered off, dried and calcined at 1260‹ C. Lead titanium zirconate may be made similarly.
