Abstract

1412882 Powder coating process BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 4 Jan 1973 [5 Jan 1972] 532/73 Heading C3P A coating process comprises applying a powdered coating agent to a substrate followed by heating the resulting coating at from 120- 200‹ C., the coating agent being a fine powder of a mixture of:- (A) a blocked polyisocyanate, 50-100% by weight of which is a blocked polyisocyanate of which the isocyanate groups are attached to an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical and which is blocked with a CH-acid, OH-acid and/or NH-acid blocking agent; (B) a copolymer of (a) from 7À5 to 40% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having one or more hydroxyl groups; (b) from 30 to 92À5% by weight of at least one monomer selected from (meth)acrylate esters of C 1 to C 8 aliphatic alcohols and C 8 to C 10 vinyl benzene and propenylbenzene hydrocarbons; and (c) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one other copolymerizable monoolefinically unsaturated monomer, which copolymer has been obtained by bulk polymerization with evaporative cooling and has a softening temperature higher than 55‹ C.; (C) from 0 to 30% by weight (based on the total coating agent) of a polyester, phenoplast resin, rosin, drying oil, non-drying oil and/or cellulose derivative which is suitable as a binder for coating agents; and (d) from 0 to 5% by weight (based on the total coating agent) of a thermoplastic flow improver and/or organic solvent. Monomer (a) is preferably a mono(meth)acrylate ester of a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. a C 1 -C 4 alkane diol. Other suitable hydroxy monomers include allyl alcohol, buten- 1-ol-3, and unsaturated thioethanols, ethers, methylol compounds and ketones containing a hydroxyl group. Optional monomers (C) include unsaturated carboxylic acids, nitriles, hemiesters of polycarboxylic acids and amides. In examples the blocked polyisocyanates are adducts of (a) isophorone diisocyanate and #-caprolactam and (b) hexamethylene diisocyanate and ethyl acetoacetate. The coating agent may also contain a pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide. In examples coatings are applied to sheet steel.
