Abstract
1412731 Ethers of bis-[4-dimethylaminophenyl]methanol IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Oct 1972 [21 July 1971] 34191/71 Heading C2C Alkyl ethers of bis-[dimethylaminophenyl]- methanol (Michler's hydrol) in which the alkyl group has 1-4 carbon atoms are prepared by contacting bis-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-methane in a C 1 -C 4 alkanol solvent with gaseous oxygen in the presence of a salt of a transition metal. The product may also contain two bis- (dimethylamino)-benzhydryl residues and ketals derived from Michler's ketone and the alcohol solvent. The preferred transition metals are copper, iron, silver and cobalt, and the preferred salts are fluoroborates and perchlorates and the salt may be used on a conventional support. Preferably the reaction is carried out in the presence of an acidic material or an organic base which is not strong enough to displace the transition metal from solution.
