Abstract
1412510 Push-button actuator PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48263/73 Heading G1N A push-button mechanism comprises a fixed Hall element arranged between magnets movable relative thereto for generating pulses, of which magnets a control magnet is rigidly connected to a slidable button shaft and a snap magnet is freely movable in a direction parallel to the button shaft, the magnetic fields being such that the movement of the snap magnet after release from a rest position is determined by the displacement of the control magnet, and that the Hall element is outside the field with the button in the rest position and within the field between the magnets with the button in the switching position. A carrier plate 7 bearing a Hall element 8 stands between a control magnet 4 fixed to a push-button shaft 3 and magnetized transversely to the direction of motion, and an annular snap magnet 5 freely slidable in a guide sleeve 14 of a housing 1 and magnetized in the direction of motion. At rest, Fig. 1, the snap magnet 5 is magnetically held at the top of the sleeve 14 by a magnetizable metal ring 6. Initial depression of the button displaces the control magnet 4 until the resultant force releases the snap magnet 5 from the ring 6, snapping it downward to bring the field between the magnets into linkage with the Hall element 8, Fig. 3. The release of the snap magnet 5, by eliminating its resistance to the depression of the control magnet 4, also provides tactile feedback to the operator. A safety plate 12 attached to an extension 11 of the button shaft 3 serves to damp oscillation of the snap magnet 5 and to return it to the rest position when the button is released. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), instead of a safety plate, there are provided an upper spring (15) compressible between the button shaft (3) and the upper face of a solid-cylindrical snap magnet (5), and a lower spring (16) compressible between the lower face of the snap magnet (5) and the bottom of the guide sleeve.
