Abstract

1412506 Gyroscopic camera support K MITO 21 Sept 1973 [11 Oct 1972] 44450/73 Heading G2A A camera is detachably mounted on a base which includes a pair of gyroscopes and drive means therefor, the base having two handles, of which one has means for actuating the camera shutter release after the drive means has been operated, thus stabilizing the camera during the actual exposure. As shown, the camera 13 is attached by a screw mounting 5 to a mounting base 2 having a lower casing 11 containing the gyroscopes. On either side of base 2 are handles 7, 10 handle 10 containing batteries 16, 16' for driving the gyroscopes. As shown, two gyroscopes 22a, 22b, with mutually perpendicular shafts, are mounted in movable gimbals 25a, 25b, themselves supported in fixed gimbals 21a, 21b. To handle 7 is fixed one end of a flexible shaft 15 whose other end is attached to the shutter release. Within handle 7 is an operating lever 19 pivoted at one end on a shaft 20, and biased by a spring 40 so that a button 8 extends through an opening to the exterior. When button 8 is pressed, a first projection 19a on lever 19 engages against a transmission lever 39, which causes brake shoes 29a, 29b to be disengaged from gyroscopes 22a, 22b, so leaving them free to rotate. A second projection 19b then closes a switch 44, which completes the circuits to the motors 23a, 23b which then drive the gyroscopes. A third projection 19c then engages the release wire 43 running through shaft 15 to actuate the camera shutter. When button 8 is released, the motor circuits are broken, and the brake shoes 29a, 29b are spring-urged back into contact with the gyroscopes to bring them to a stop. In another embodiment Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the braking is effected electrically.
