Abstract

1412418 Shelf forming MONO CONTAINERS Ltd 23 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3878/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division A4] A method of forming a peripheral bead at the mouth of a drinking cup, comprises firstly forming the cup to have an inwardly and upwardly extending portion 13, a radially outwardly extending top portion 14, and an outwardly and downwardly extending skirt 15, and subsequently pressing the top portion 14 towards the rest of the cup to partially flatten the inwardly and upwardly extending portion 13. During the pressing operation the lower part of the portion 13 moves outwardly and the upper part of the portion 13 moves inwardly. The cup may be supported by a generally horizontal shelf 12 on a locating ring (17), Fig. 2 (not shown), and pressed into a pressing die (18). An array of cups may be vacuum-formed from a large sheet of material 16. Punching dies 21, 22 severe the cups from the sheet material 16 at 20.
