Abstract

1412287 Polyesters TEIJIN Ltd 6 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971 10 Jan 1972] 56379/72 Heading C3R In a process for the production of a polyester there is added to a molten polyester containing units derived from a dicarboxylic acid or hydroxycarboxylic acid and units derived from a glycol, an aromatic ortho-ester of formula in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 each independently represents a monovalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups and having a molecular weight not exceeding 250, or any two of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 together form a ring and R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and X satisfy one of the following conditions: (a) X is a group of formula wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group free from functional groups, and having a molecular weight not exceeding 250 and at least one of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represents a monovalent aromatic group, (b) X is a group of formula wherein Y 1 represents a divalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups, p is 0 or 1 and R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are as defined for R 1 , R 2 and R 3 with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 represents a monovalent aromatic group, (c) X is a group of formula wherein Y 2 represents a divalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups, p is 0 or 1 and R 7 represents a monovalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups, and having a molecular weight not exceeding 250 and at least one of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represents a monovalent aromatic group, or (d) X is a group of formula wherein Y 3 represents a divalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups, and R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and Z satisfy one of the following conditions:- (i) Z is a group of formula or wherein R 9 represents a monovalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups and having a molecular weight not exceeding 250, R 8 is as defined for R 9 or represents a hydrogen atom and at least one of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represents a monovalent aromatic group, (ii) Z is a group of formula in which R 10 ) and R 12 each independently represent a monovalent organic group free from ester forming functional groups and having a molecular weight not exceeding 250, and R 11 is as defined for R 10 and R 12 or represents a hydrogen atom, or any two of R 10 , R 11 and R 12 together form a ring, with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 10 and R 12 represents a monovalent aromatic group, or (iii) Z is a group of formula wherein R 13 , R 14 and R 15 are as defined for R 1 , R 2 and R 3 with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 13 , R 14 and R 15 represents a monovalent aromatic group, the polycondensation being effected by removing glycol from the polyester while the reaction mixture is in the molten or solid state. Polyethylene terephthalate when prepared by such a process is stated to have a greater affinity for disperse dyes. Comparative examples describe the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate in the presence of a wide variety of orthoesters.
