Abstract

1412281 Trimming books by sawing STROUD GRAPHIC EQUIPMENT Ltd 27 Dec 1972 [1 Jan 1972] 15/72 Heading B5L A machine for trimming books comprises a trimming station 23, means for advancing the books to the trimming station, trimming means at the trimming station for trimming that edge of a book opposite to the spine, a sensor 140 or 108 mounted in advance of the trimming station to detect the width or thickness of books, and means operatively connected to the sensor and the trimming means for adjusting the relative positions of the trimming means and a book being trimmed in accordance with the detected width or thickness of the book. In one embodiment a book B is fed to a hot belt binder 21 and its thickness is determined by a sensor 140 before it is fed to conveyers 24, 25a, 25b. The conveyer 25b is mounted on a fixed bed 42 and the conveyer 25a is supported by rollers 60, 62, 66 on a movable bed 41. Band saws 34, 36 carried in housings on the beds 41, 42 respectively trim the side edges of the book, while a band saw 43 trims the edge opposite the spine 32. The position of the saw 43 is controlled from the sensor 140 so that the book's height 143 depends on its thickness and the position of the saw 34 is determined by a sensor 70 which ensures removal of a constant width of selvage by adjustment of the position of the bed 41. Each sensor includes a plate carrying a first electrical contact, spring mounted relative to a support carrying second and third spaced contacts. Engagement between the first and either the second or third contacts closes a circuit to cause an electric motor to drive the associated band saw housing toward or away from the books. A time delay is included in the circuit from the sensor 140 to the motor for adjusting the position of the saw 43 so that the time taken for a book to travel from the sensor to the saw is allowed for. Alternatively the position of saw 43 is controlled by a sensor 108 acting in a similar manner to the sensor 70.
