Abstract

1412245 Electro-physical measurements BOOTS CO Ltd 18 Dec 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 44107/71 Heading G1N Two fractions of immiscible liquids are separated by passing two liquids in succession along a flow path past a pair of electrodes mounted opposite each other in the flow path, detecting the change in electrical conductivity occurring when the interface between the liquids passes the electrodes and controlling the flow, in response to the conductivity change, to separate the fractions. In one arrangement in which the liquids have different specific gravities the liquids are contained in a first container 2 mounted vertically over a flow pipe in which are mounted a pair of tantalum electrodes 8a, 8b, the flow pipe 1 leading to a second container (not shown) via a valve 11 controlled by the output of a conductivity meter 14 connected to the electrodes 8a, 8b, via conductor rods 7, each mounted in a glass tube 6, so as to form a cruciform arrangement with the flow path 1. When the interface between the two liquids passes the electrodes 8a, 8b the valve 11 is actuated to stop the flow so that the heavier fraction is contained in the second container and the lighter fraction in the first. Alternatively a third container may be provided Fig. 2 (not shown) the valve diverting the flow from the second container to the third when the interface is detected. More than one pair of electrodes may be used.
