1412170 Filter system E B BURDON ENGS Ltd 16 Nov 1973 53342/73 Heading B1D [Also in Division B7] A vehicle washing plant has a water recycling circuit providing water which is used in both a washing cycle and a rinsing cycle to clean a vehicle in a washing chamber 10 through spray arch nozzles 12, the plant including a back-wash filter 18 (which can be cleansed of accumulated dirt by liquid flow in the reverse direction to that of normal flow) and a further filter 32, water for the rinsing cycle being supplied via firstly the back-wash filter 18 and then the further filter 32. The chamber 10 drains at 13 into a sump 14 from which a pump 15 can force water through the back-wash filter 18 and thence into a settling tank 21. A second pump 28 can pump the water through a three-way valve system 29, 30, 31 which leads to a washing chamber inlet conduit 37 via a selected one of either the filter 32, or a second (optional) back-wash filter 33 or a by-pass conduit 34. For normal washing, the water passes through the back-wash filter 18 but by-passes the other filters, although for extra purity it may pass through filter 33. For rinsing, the water also passes through the filter 32 or through backwash filter 33 if filter 32 is out of action. The filter 32 comprises a series of receptacles containing filter medium including activated carbon, the receptacles being arranged one above another in a column down which the water passes, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the floor of each receptacle being formed by a foraminous screen and the upstream receptacle being replaceable.
