Abstract

1412158 Voltage surge protective arrangements POST OFFICE 5 April 1974 [18 May 1973] 23792/73 Heading H2H An arrangement for the protection of repeaters in a communication system comprising two lines 4, 5 from high voltage surges comprises at least two gas discharge diodes 2, 3 connected in series between the lines 4, 5, a capacitor 6 being connected in parallel with the diode 3 and, if desired, a resistor 7 in parallel with the capacitor 6. In operation, when a high voltage surge appears across the lines 4, 5, the diode 2 breaks down, capacitor 6 charges up and diode 3 eventually breaks down so protecting apparatus connected to the lines 4, 5. As the voltage on the lines 4, 5 falls the diodes 2, 3 recover at a voltage higher than their normal recovery voltage due to the parallel connected capacitor 6. The arrangement can be used in a high frequency system since the capacitor 6 is normally disconnected from the lines 4, 5 by the diode 2. In a practical communications system each repeater has one such arrangement connected across the repeater and one each across the input and output leads thereof respectively. The diode 3 may be replaced by a plurality of diodes in series.
