Abstract

1412151 Slack adjusters GIRLING Ltd 5 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51733/72 Headings F2E and F2K An automatic slack adjuster, particularly for vehicle brakes comprises first and second members 1, 14 having a non-reversible screwthread connection 4 therebetween and having respective thrust surfaces 2, 45, control means for turning the second member 14 relative to the first responsively to a requirement for adjustment, the second member 14 being in two parts 14a, 14b the first, 14a, of which has the non- reversible screwthread connection 4 and thrust surface 45 and the second 14b, of which is acted on by the control means, the two parts being so connected that the second part 14b rotates the first 14a when the control means is operative and the second part 14b turns relative to the first when an axial force is applied in one direction to the first part 14a. The adjuster shown is in a drum brake actuated by a wedge member 35 which acts on actuator members 11, 42 to spread them apart. During normal braking there is sufficient axial clearance at the reversible screwthread connection 23a, 23b between a control member 24 of the control means and the part 14a of the second member for the normal axial travel of member 14 not to take up fully this clearance. If lining wear takes place this clearance is taken up and member 14 acts on control member 24 tending to separate friction surfaces 25a, 25b respectively provided on the member 24 and the internal bore of the adjuster housing 25. The load of a spring 26 acting between the control member 24 and a retaining cup 27 is thereby partially relieved so that the reversible screwthread connection 23a, 23b turns member 24. On brake release screwthread 23a moves to the opposite flank of screwthread 23b before full release is attained. The screwthread connection 4 is thereby relieved of axial load and friction surfaces 25a, 25b are biased together by spring 26 thereby preventing rotation of control member 24. The second member 14 is thereby unscrewed from a strut 1, engaging one brake shoe lining to increase the length of the adjuster. It is stated that providing the second member 14 in two parts 14a, 14b relieves the reversible screwthread connection of shock loads.
