The tools 82, 84 resemble the nail-inserting tools of Specification 875802 but with hammer heads 88, 86 instead of nail-handling parts. The last L is supported as shown so as to be movable, upon acutation of piston rod 48, from the full-line position of Fig. 1 to the broken-line position in which the toe end of the insole contacts hammer head 88 of percussion tool 82. This actuates the tool which applies percussive force to the insole to impale it on the locating member 2. Further extension of piston rod 48 now causes the last to pivot about the toe, end so that the heel end rises and contacts the other hammer head 86 which attaches the insole to the other locating member 4. A stiffly flexible metal blade (200), Fig. 7 (not shown) or a pair of transverse coil springs (250) Fig. 9 (not shown) may be attached to the toe-end tool 82 to hold down the insole I against the last L prior to attachment to prevent misalignment of the insole and last. Similarly, a tubular hold-down member may surround hammer head 86 to hold down the heel end of insole I.
