Abstract

936,600. Shaping shoe uppers. M. L. DODGE. Sept. 21, 1961, No. 33933/61. Class 17 (1). A machine for shaping shoe uppers comprises a base having a working platform 10, an inner shaping member 12 yieldingly mounted on the platform 10, an outer shaping member 30 slidable upon the platform 10 and means operable to cause relative movement between members 12, 30 to bring them into engagement with each other. Member 12 is yieldingly mounted on platform 10 by spring 18 (not shown) acting between a collar on projection 16 of member 12 and platform 10 and is held against forward motion by bolt 22. Member 12 has convex side walls and a rounded rear end 14. Member 30 is U-shaped the inner surface of arms 32 being concave to co-operate with the side walls of member 12. Member 30 is urged towards member 12 by handle 42 and pivoted links 36, 44, the thrust being delivered by a head 52 in a recess 50. A thermostatically-operated heating coil 24 is placed in a cavity 26 of member 12. A shoe W is placed over member 12. Member 30 is urged against the upper and member 12 whence the upper is pinched. As the force on member 30 increases, member 12 rises from platform 10 against the action of spring 18 (not shown), member 30 thus smoothing the upper over member 12. The shoe may be held above platform 10 by an adjustable spring support 60 which is forced into its retracted position on the movement of member 30 over it and by an adjustable shelf 74. The top edge of the upper round the instep region may be rounded by rubbing the edge in a groove 84 formed in the forward end 82 of heated member 12. A separate tool comprising a ball 90 on a stem used for local stretching of an upper may be mounted on a corner of platform 10.
