Abstract

1411722 Testing gas content of steel SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING AND DEVELOPMENT CO BV 25 Jan 1974 [5 Feb 1973] 03624/74 Heading G1B A method of testing the oxygen and nitrogen content of a steel sample comprises heating the sample in a vacuum or non-oxidizing atmosphere to extract oxygen and nitrogen gases and then measuring the properties of these gases in comparison with the properties of the oxygen and nitrogen gases extracted by heat from a standard test piece having a known weight and known oxygen and nitrogen content, the standard piece consisting of a spherical body. The surface of the standard test piece may be coated with a layer of gold or another oxidizing-resistant material. The standard test piece may be made of ball bearing steel produced by the open-hearth process, and may be finish polished.
