Abstract

899,214. Inspecting metals for flaws. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Jan. 6, 1961 [Jan. 14, 1960], No. 1377/60. Class 106 (2). Metal parts are inspected for flaws or imperfect brazing by coating the surface with a particulate material, e.g. iron oxide in a volatile liquid carrier, and subjecting the surface to infra-red heat. Infra-red rays are reflected back from interior metal/air interfaces and consequently the metal above a flaw becomes hotter and the carrier fluid flows to the colder parts of the metal thus indicating the flaws. The heat may be applied until the carrier has evaporated leaving the iron oxide as a permanent indication.
