1411360 Refuse compactors HOBART CORP 26 Sept 1972 [12 Oct 1971] 36662/74 Divided out of 1411289 Heading B8C A compactor, e.g. for domestic refuse, and comprising a compactor housing 10, a compaction receptacle (34), Fig. 1, means, such as sliders 42, 44, mounting the receptacle for movement between a compacting position in the housing and non-compacting positions displaced from said compacting position, a compacting ram 12, and means 14, 16 mounting the ram within the housing for movement into, and out of, the receptacle when the receptacle is in the compacting position, is characterized in that a material receiving compartment 52 is located in the housing in free communication with the receptacle in non-compacting positions thereof, communication between the compartment and the receptacle being restricted when the receptacle is in the compacting position. As shown, the ram 12 is driven for vertical reciprocal movement by three sprockets 16 carried by the ram 12 and threadedly engaged on three stationary screw-jacks 14, a reversible motor 18, mounted within the ram 12, rotating the sprockets 16 by means of a timing belt 24 and pulleys 22, 26, and a chain and sprocket mechanism 32, 30. The compartment 52 is formed by a forward wall 50, a top wall of the housing 10, a hingedly mounted small door 48, and a drainage shelf 46 on the drawer when the latter is in its compacting position. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the door (54) which provides access to the compartment (52), is hingedly connected, along its lower edge, to the upper edge of the front wall of the drawer (34). In a further modification, Fig. 3, not shown, the door (66) is hinged to the housing (56) and the compartment (68) is formed by the front wall (60) and the top and end wall (50) of the housing (56), the compacting position of the drawer (58) being obtained by pushing it further into the housing until its front wall (70) abuts the wall (50). As an alternative the door may be hinged to the upper edge of the front wall (60) of the drawer.
