Abstract
1411288 Determining the attitude of a spacecraft BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 2 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 32920/72 Heading G1A In a device for determining the attitude of a space craft 20, a transparent glass block 4, covered with an opaque coating 8 except for a slit 10, is mounted over two photo-electric detectors 14, 15 which are positioned to be spaced apart by less than the width of the slit 10 so that a beam of light passing across the slit 10 will pass progressively over the two detectors and the output signals of the two detectors will overlap Fig. 2 (not shown). The crossover point (19) of the two detector output signals defines the plane 30 containing the source (the sun 24) the slit 10 and the centre line parallel to the slit and midway between the detectors 14, 15. This point of inter-section of the two waveforms may be obtained electronically so that the reference plane 30 may be obtained and the attitude of the space craft relative to it may be determined. The space craft may be provided with a further light sensing device similar to device 2 but positioned with its slit at an angle to the slit of the first device.
