Abstract
1411005 Alpha numeric displays and circuits therefor BURROUGHS CORP 18 Jan 1973 [13 July 1972] 2711/73 Heading G5C Display apparatus comprises a flat gas discharge panel including a plurality of cathode arrays with corresponding cathodes interconnected and anodes for each array; a power supply Vss; anode and cathode drivers 200, 250 coupled to each anode 90 and group of interconnected cathodes 30A, 30D; a source 255 of input signals coupled to each cathode driver; a first bus 180 coupled to the power supply Vss by a reverse biased Zener diode 185 and, via separate resistors 295 to the output of each cathode driver; a second bus 170 connected to each cathode driver to supply bias potential; an active circuit element 165 coupled to the second bus 170 for maintaining bias; a capacitor 175 between the first and second buses; a third bus connected to element 165 and to the cathode drivers to supply feedback signals to element 165; and an impedance 167 between the capacitor 175 and element 165 for charging the capacitor proportionally to the number of cathodes energized to regulate the potential across it so that the firing threshold of the selected cathodes is exceeded. The circuit compensates for variations in the firing potential due to gas pressure and temperature and also maintains a given ionization potential. The display panel comprises an insulating base 20 carrying a plurality of conductors 30A ... 30G; a layer of insulation 40 having a plurality of groups of apertures 50A ... 50G, corresponding apertures exposing portions of the same conductor, groups of cathodes 60A ... 60G on the layer 40 and in contact with one conductor 30. A front plate spaced from base 20 by a member 110 supports anodes 90, each of which overlaps a group of cathodes. The switches 200 and drivers 250 include MOS or FET devices and may all be formed on a single chip.
