Abstract
1410863 Laminates DAB INDUSTRIES Inc 29 Oct 1973 50147/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division F2] Apparatus 30 for adhering friction material 14, 16 to a metallic ring-like element 12 to form a clutch plate comprises a lower platen 32 and an upper platen 46, means to move the platens towards and away from each other and to apply pressure to work mounted therebetween, an electrically conductive single split-ring winding 52 having a flat surface secured to one of the platens, means on the other platen to receive a clutch plate assembly including a metallic ring- like element with friction material juxtaposed thereagainst but not adhered thereto, and a layer of heat-bondable adhesive provided between the element and friction material, the winding having a sufficient band width as measured by the difference between the outer and inner diameters thereof to completely overlie the friction material, and means for applying alternating electrical energy to the winding to create an electrical field which induces current flow in the ring-like element to heat it for a period sufficient to bond the friction material to the ring-like element while simultaneously applying sufficient pressure to cause slight predetermined compression of the friction material and to achieve a predetermined thickness of the clutch plate. Lower platen 32 resting on support 34 may be raised or lowered by ram 36. A rectangular block 38 of non-electrically conductive material having a flat upper surface 40 to which is secured a flat plate 42 of electrically non- conductive material, may be secured to platen 32, the clutch plate assembly being placed on the flat surface 44 of plate 42. Blocks 58, 59 may be secured to plate 42 interiorly of the inner diameter of ring 12 to limit the movement of the lower platen towards the upper platen and thus control the exact ultimate thickness of the clutch plate. Electrically conductive single split ring winding 52 may be secured to the lower surface 54 of a block of electrically non-conductive material 50 secured to platen 46, a flat plate 56 of electrically non-conductive material being secured to the lower face of ring 52. Embossing elements may be provided on plates 42 and 56 to simultaneously emboss a grooved or raised configuration on the outer surfaces of the friction material 14, 16. Element 12 which may be made of steel may have a smaller inner diameter than friction material 14, 16, a tooth structure being formed on the inner periphery of the element in the area not covered by friction material 14, 16. Friction material 14, 16 may be made from paper-like material comprising cellulose or asbestos fibres, red iron oxide and resin. Elements 12 may be coated with adhesive by suspending them from a continuous conveyer belt, dipping them in liquid adhesive and drying in an oven. Alternatively the adhesive may be applied as a dry powder or film cut to the desired size. The adhesive may be thermosetting, e.g. phenolic resin, or thermoplastic.
