Abstract

1410682 Laminated materials BALAMUNDI NEDERLAND BV 5 March 1973 [3 March 1972] 10595/73 Heading B2E A process for producing a laminated material based on a thermoplastic polymer permanently deformable only above 140‹C, comprises: applying the polymer in the form of a paste onto a backing material comprising non- interwoven fibres; causing the polymer to solidify e.g. by heating; dampening the backing material; and impressing a pattern in the thermoplastic polymer at a temperature lower than 140‹C, the degree of dampening and the embossing temperature being such that the backing material has just been restored to a dry condition after the embossing operation. The polymer may be p.v.c. or preferably, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer. In examples (1, 2) the copolymer is applied by doctor blade to latex impregnated paper, smoothed, impressed with an "intaglio" pattern given an acrylate top coat and then embossed after dampening (3) copolymer paste is applied to a smooth paper foil, then a fibrous mat consisting of polyester fibres is placed on the paste to form the backing, after the polymer is solidified, the paper foil is removed; the polymer surface is then "intaglio" imprinted, coated with acrylate and embossed after dampening.
