Abstract

1410632 Aerials C & S ANTENNAS Ltd 10 May 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6334/72 Heading H4A [Also in Division B3] In an aerial of the kind in which a secondary reflector faces a main reflector, any manufacturing distortions from a predetermined geometrical form which are present in the surface of the main reflector are at least partially compensated for by providing complementary distortions in the surface of the secondary reflector. As described, an aerial comprises a primary horn radiator 3, a hyperboloidal secondary reflector 4, and a paraboloidal main reflector 1. A structure 2 supports the horn and the main reflector, and arms 5 extending therefrom support the secondary reflector. The difference between the actual shape of the main reflector 1 and a true paraboloid is determined by measurements made, for example, by vernier or micrometer probes, or by a laser range-finding technique. Knowing the errors in the shape of the main reflector, a complementary shape for the secondary reflector may be computed, preferably digitally, using either ray tracing geometrical optical theory, or wave theory. In many cases distortion of the main reflector is circularly symmetrical, so that the surface of the secondary reflector may be shaped in a turning operation. Alternatively, the secondary reflector may be machined utilizing a machine tool with three-axis numerical control, e.g. some form of erosion machining tool.
