Abstract
1410563 Photographing shock waves EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 12 Feb 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 6830/73 Heading H4D Apparatus for photographing shock waves generated in a liquid by implosion of vapour bubbles, for studying the size and shape of the wave-front, the propagation speed, interference between direct and reflected waves and the effect of temperature on an event, comprises a tank 1 holding the liquid 2 (water or molten metal), a vapour injector 3, a discharge lamp 12 for producing a flash of light, and a Schlieren optical system 13, 14, 15, 17 for directing the light through parallel windows 16 of the tank and into a camera 8. In operation of the apparatus, switch 7 is closed when the shutter of camera 8 is opened, after which the output of shock wave detector 5 is used to trigger, via delay unit 10, the light flash. The interval between shock wave generation and detection of the light flash by photodiode 18 is monitored on oscilloscope 9. The delay provided by unit 10 is variable for photographing the shock wave at various instants after its generation.
