Abstract
1410483 Free radicals and their use as oxidizing agents BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 14 March 1973 [5 April 1972] 15591/72 Headings C2C and C2U Reactive intermediates are prepared by irradiation with white light of a mixture of oxygen, a neutral non-hydroxylic solvent and a cation of general Formula (I) An n C<SP>(+)</SP>H m in which An is a phenyl or substituted phenyl group, n is 1, 2 or 3, and m is 0 or an integer such that n+m is equal to 3. Suitable solvents are for example hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, acetonitrile or nitromethane. The intermediates may be used for introducing triplet oxygen into compounds containing a cis-1,3- diene group. Thus compounds of formulae are produced from ergosteryl-3#-acetate, 2- isopropyl-5-methyl-hexa-1,3-diene and bicyclohexylene respectively; tetraphenylfuran is converted to cis-1,2-dibenzoyl-1,2-diphenylethylene; lumisteryl acetate is converted to lumisteryl - 5,8# - peroxide acetate; a mixture of terpinenes (51% α-terpinene) is converted to ascaridole; and bicyclohexenyl is converted to its peroxide. When tetraphenyl furan is oxidized the initial product is an ozonide which is hydrolysed without separation to give the dibenzoyl derivative referred to above.
