The vessel 1 is preferably spherical is rotatable about a horizontal axis and has internal ribs 9 which assist the mixing process, steam supply piping 8, 3 enters the vessel on the axis of rotation and a charging and discharging aperture in the wall of the vessel is arranged so as to pass through top and bottom positions on rotation of the vessel, the aperture being closed during the regeneration process by a closure element 7 held in the closed position by the steam pressure. Discharge of the contents of the vessel at the end of the process is effected by releasing the steam pressure through pipes 3, 8 (which allows the element 7 to open) and then rotating the vessel 1. An external fin 5 sweeps the discharged material away from beneath the vessel.
