Abstract

1409977 Electro-phoretic desposition; obtaining metals by reduction STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 29 Jan 1974 [6 Feb 1973] 5784/73 Heading C7B A substance having an acid-soluble oxidized form e.g. Se, Te, Cd or Pb selenide, is cataphoretically deposited from an acid solution of the said form which contains a reducing agent which is ineffective in the absence of an applied current. As described, Se is deposited from an aqueous solution of SeO 2 (which exists as H 2 SeO 3 ) at PH<2.0, diluted with methanol or amyl alcohol and rendered conductive with H 2 SeO 4 . The reducing agent may be benzaldehyde, glucose, cinnamaldehyde, anisaldehyde or Na hypophosphite. Alternatively, H 2 O 2 is added to a methanol solution of SeO 2 , which is then boiled to give H 2 SeO 4 before addition of benzaldehyde and cataphoresis. At room temperature red amorphous Se is formed but at 110‹C the grey metallic form appears. The cathode may be a photo-resist masked to obtain selective deposition.
