Abstract
1409940 Shotgun cartridges FABRIQUE NATIONALE HERSTAL SA 13 Dec 1973 [11 Jan 1973] 57820/73 Heading F3A A shotgun cartridge comprises an explosive projectile in which the explosive charge 7, Fig. 1, is surrounded by metal fragments 9 embedded in a plastic component 5, the rear part 6 of which acts as an obturator and as flight stabilizing means. The outer surface of the part 6 may be formed with longitudinal or helical ribs or grooves (not shown). Elasticity is imparted to the surface 26 of part 6 by the provision of a chamber 25. The fragments 9 are either balls or darts. A percussion cap 8 for firing the charge 7 upon impact of the projectile is detonated by a firing pin 11. Safety is provided by a shearable flange 14 formed on the firing pin and by a shutter 15 which, upon escape of a ball 20, is moved by a spring from out of an obturating position. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the detonator 8 is fired upon impact of the projectile by air being forced from a deformable chamber 24 through a passage 23 and on to the detonator.
