Abstract

1409896 Lamps MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971 9 Dec 1971 11 Dec 1971 (2) 17 Dec 1971] 54491/72 Heading F4R [Also in Divisions H5 and B3] In an apparatus having a high temperature radient lamp S set at one focus F 1 of an elliptical mirror E, so as to heat a workpiece at the other focus F 2 , cooling fluid is directed from nozzles N on to the lamp and its associated components and extracted though an exhaust Ex. The nozzles may be arranged to direct the fluid tangentially on to the lamp and electrodes and the fluid may also cool the mirror. Alternatively fluid may be directed from a fan 9, Fig. 3, on to the lamp 7 and extracted by for example a blower fan 11. A radiation transparent plate 12 prevents coolant reaching the workpiece, the plate being plastics or glass and being optically corrected for minimum reflectance, Figs. 6a, 6b (not shown). In order to further reduce the operating temperature the intensity shutter which obstructs the radiation beam between source and workpiece may be coupled via a transducer to the intensity controls of the lamp.
