Abstract
1409728 Electrodepositable resin PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 27 Oct 1972 [28 Oct 1971 1 Dec 1971] 49605/72 Heading C3B An electrodepositable resin, prepared from a resin containing epoxy groups, contains amino groups, at least a portion of which are primary amino groups which may be blocked by ketimine groups, hydroxyl groups and blocked or capped isocyanate groups which are reactive with hydroxyl or amino groups at elevated temperature. There may be 0À5-2À0 latent urethane groups per hydroxyl group. The products may be obtained by reacting a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol with a primary or secondary amine and a semi-capped organic polyisocyanate having an average of about one free NCO group per molecule. The capping may be achieved by reaction with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, alkoxyalkyl or aromatic alkyl monoalcohol, a tertiary hydroxylamine or an oxime. The ketimine blocked amine groups may be obtained from a diketimine derived from one mole of diethylenetriamine and 2 moles of methyl isobutyl ketone. Electrodepositable compositions may be prepared by acidifying, e.g. with glacial acetic acid. A polyurethane forming catalyst, e.g. dibutyl tin dilaurate, may also be present. In an example an approximately 5% solids aqueous composition was prepared which was deposited at pH 4À5 using 400 volts for 90 seconds. An acetone resistant film was obtained after curing 10 minutes at 350‹ F.
