Abstract

1409335 Wedge actuators; internal shoe drum brakes CENTRAX Ltd and R H H BARR 10 April 1974 [10 April 1973] 17149/73 Heading F2E A brake-operating mechanism comprises a pair of aligned transmission elements 11, 12, mounted in guide means 8, (integral with a spider 8a), a wedge element 21 having a wedge part 22 between the transmission elements, complementarily-inclined surfaces 15, 16 on the transmission elements and 19, 20 on the wedge part, a roller 35 or 36 between each transmission element and the wedge part 22, a coil spring 31 through which the wedge element 21 passes, and which biases the wedge element axially in one direction (to the right, as shown), and a roller carrier 39 which is supported on the spring 31. As shown, the roller carrier 39 has a sleeve portion 41 which is co-axial with and is supported by and within the spring. This sleeve constitutes a second portion of the roller carrier which has a pivotal connection with a first portion 42 of the roller carrier; the pivotal connection is afforded by an outwardly-facing surface 43 on the first portion 42 comprising at least part of a circle and engaging the interior surface of the sleeve; the surface 43 is axially slidable in the sleeve. The first portion 42 which actually carries the rollers 35, 36, is U- shaped, the free ends having notches 37, 38, for the rollers and the closed end forming the (annular) surface 43 through which stem 23 of wedge element 21 passes. The spring is located between a washer 34 abutting a surface 10 in guide means 8 and a disc 32 secured to stem 23. For brake application, wedge element 21 is moved leftwards (Fig. 2) by fluid pressure actuator 45, Fig. 1. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a separate sleeve portion 41 is omitted: instead, annular surface 43 is continued rightwards to form a part-spherical flange (53) for sliding and pivoting. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the closed end of portion 42 is omitted: instead, a sleeve engaging the spring has two parallel transverse members joined by a pivot which passes through the two limbs of portion 42 and, between them, the stem 23.
