Abstract

1409276 Laminated metal-plastics mudguards SEKISUI JUSHI KK 4 Oct 1972 [6 Oct 1971] 45768/72 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division B7] A mudguard for cycle wheels comprises a layer 1 of non-transparent, rigid, thermallyresistant synthetic resin, a metal foil layer 2 and a transparent weather-resistant synthetic resin or cellulosic plastics layer 3. The mudguard may be provided with continuous or intermittent longitudinal projections, e.g. as shown at 4, 5. Suitable cross-sections are illustrated. The layer 1 may be thermoplastic, e.g. ABS resin, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, or thermosetting, e.g. unsaturated polyester, phenolic resin, and may be reinforced by glass, carbon or metal fibres dispersed therein or laminated therewith as a mat or woven fabric, or by a metal plate laminated thereon or embedded therewith. The metal foil 2 may be Al, Sn, Cu, stainless steel, brass, alloy or a metallized resin film, and may be reinforced with synthetic resin or paper. The foil may be coloured, patterned or embossed. The layer 3 may be plasticized polyvinyl chloride, methacrylic resin, cellulose acetate butyrate, polyester, cellulose triacetate or polyvinyl fluoride. The layers may be adhered by pressure-sensitive or heat-sensitive adhesive and the metal foil 2 may be slightly narrower than layers 1, 3. In examples, an Al foil coated on both sides with adhesive is disposed between layers of ABS resin and cellulose acetate butyrate. The mudguard is made by forming a laminate of the three layers, forming the laminate into the desired cross-section in a shaping die, solidifying, bending to a predetermined curvature and cutting to a predetermined length. The laminate is preferably formed either (i) by extruding layer 1 and successively pressing preformed layers 2 and 3 thereon (see Figs. 5/6, not shown), or (ii) by feeding a foil 2 through the die of an extruder wherein it contacts layer 1 as it is being extruded, and extruding layer 3 on to the foil 2, suitably in the same die. (See Fig. 7, not shown). After shaping to the desired cross-section, the laminate is solidified by cooling if layer 1 is thermoplastic or by heating to just below curing point if layer 1 is thermosetting. The material is bent around a series of appropriately-shaped rollers lying on a predetermined line of curvature; if layer 1 is thermoplastic the material may be softened by infra-red heaters, whereas if layer 1 is thermosetting the material is heated after bending for final curing.
