Abstract
1409250 Diglycidyl esters SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 13 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 58307/71 Heading C3B Brominated polyepoxides have the general formula in which n has an average value from 0À0 to 0À3 and R is the divalent group wherein R 1 and R 2 separately are H or alkyl groups or combined are a methylene or alkyl substituted methylene group; R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are the same or different and are H or alkyl groups; from 30-100% of R 7 represents Br, the remainder of R 7 representing hydrogen. Preferred I are (a) in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are all hydrogen and (b) in which R 1 and R 2 combined represent methylene and R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 represent H. The polyepoxides may be prepared by reacting polyepoxides of Formula I in which R is: in which R 1 to R 6 have the meanings defined above, with 0À3 to 1 mole of bromine per mole of polyepoxide. The bromine may be dissolved in an inert solvent, e.g. CCl 4 . The polyepoxide may also be dissolved in an inert solvent, e.g. epichlorhydrin. Bromination may take place at 20-40‹ C. The brominated polyepoxide may be cured by means of conventional epoxy resin hardeners.
