Abstract

1409123 Artificial acetabulum SULZER BROS LTD 22 Jan 1973 [1 Feb 1972] 3191173 Heading A5R An artificial acetabulum comprises a rigid shell 1 having a highly resilient intermediate material 5, i.e. material having a hardness in Shore A values of less than or equal to 90, secured to the external surface 3 of the shell 1, the external surface of the intermediate material 5 being formed with anchoring grooves 6 and recesses 7. The shell 1 is made of a bodycompatible metal alloy or plastics material and has, on the surface 3, ribs (4), Fig 1 (not shown) which prevent relative movement of the intermediate material 5 on the surface 3. Wire rings 8, secured to the ribs 4 by brazing, further anchor the intermediate material 5 on the shell 1. The acetabulum is secured in a pelvis by means of a plastics bone cement 12. e.g. methyl methacrylate, which flows into artificial recesses 11 in the pelvis and forms pegs 13 and also flows into the grooves 6 and the recesses 7.
