Abstract

1408914 Moulding tubes MIDLAND INDUSTRIES Ltd and P E HERR 19 Sept 1972 43406/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions E1 and B3] A tubular handrail stanchion is formed with a bulbous portion covered with a hollow bulbous member 1 or 2 by passing the tube through a hole or holes in the bulbous member and applying internal pressure to expand the tube into conformity with the inner walls of the bulbous member. The bulbous elements are held in dies during the expansion which is effected by known ram means, the other end of the tube being closed by a mandrel. A deformable rubber or polyurethane liner may be utilized during expansion. Alternatively deformable metal plugs located within the tube may be caused to expand the tube by plungers and subsequently melted out. The cover for the bulbous portion may be a rigid or a flexible member such as rubber or plastics. The expansion is preferably effected in the cold state.
