1408909 Tyre changing apparatus D B CURCHOD 8 Sept 1972 [10 Sept 1971] 41770/72 Heading B7C A tyre changer comprises a surface 31 for supporting a wheel and tyre assembly, a working cylinder having a piston connected directly (Fig. 2, not shown and Fig. 11) or indirectly (Fig. 10, not shown) to a shaft 13 (65), a bead breaker 22 mountable on a screwthreaded portion of the shaft, and an assembly A mountable on the, or another, screw-threaded portion for removing the tyre from, or mounting a tyre on, the wheel. In operation of the changer of Figs. 4 and 7, a wheel and tyre assembly is placed on the surface 31, and the beads are broken by the breaker 22 on axial movements of the shaft (Fig. 4). The wheel and tyre assembly is then fitted over the shaft and the assembly A is applied to the shaft. The end 36<SP>1</SP> of tyre lever 36 is placed between the upper bead and rim. Upon downward axial movement of the shaft, the wheel is first clamped by a cone portion 34 and then nut portion 33 and the lever are rotated relative to the shaft to dismount the upper bead. The lower bead is similarly forced over the upper rim flange. In fitting a tyre on the wheel, the lever is positioned as in Fig. 7 and rotation of the lever forces the lower bead axially inwardly over the upper rim flange. The upper bead is similarly forced axially inwardly over the upper rim flange. The cylinder may be pneumatically or hydraulically operated.
