Abstract
1408553 Deburring H L NEILSEN 6 June 1974 [14 June 1973] 25258/74 Headings B3D and B3X A deburring device for edges e, Fig. 2, of sheet material w comprises an annular peening- element container 36 coaxially fixed upon a rotatable shaft 30, plural peening elements 38 loosely retained in the containers and capable of radially outward displacement arising from centrifugal force developed by rotation of the device, the container having a continuous circumferential slot 35 providing an area for deburring interengagement between the peening elements and a workpiece edge. In one embodiment, the container is formed by a pair of cups 31 which are spaced apart by a sleeve 32 and clamped against a flange 33 on the shaft 30 by a nut 34. The peening elements consist of steel balls 38 which may be coated with abrasive and, during rotation of the device, are thrown centrifugally outwards to deburr the edge of a workpiece passed through the slot 35 between the cups. In another embodiment, the peening elements consist of rollers 46, Fig. 5, located in opposed cavities 45 in carriers 41 which are received within cups 40 and mounted on the shaft 30. The rollers have grooves 47 which may have an abrasive surface. During rotation of the device, the rollers are urged outwardly centrifugally to deburr the edge e of the workpiece w. In a further embodiment, the peening-elements 53, Fig. 9, are in the form of rollers which are generally radially disposed in cavities 51, 52 in retainers 49 spaced apart by a sleeve 50 on a rotatable shaft. The cavities 51 are larger than the cavities 52 and alternate in the retainers, the arrangement being such that a large cavity in one retainer is opposite a small cavity in the other retainer. The outer ends 51 of the rollers are hemispherical so that, in use, the centrifugal force causes pivoting of the rollers into engagement with the edge of the workpiece. In a fourth embodiment, the peening elements 54, Fig. 13, are in the form of grooved rollers having trunnions 60 retained in radial slots 63 in a guide 56 by shallow cups 55. In a fifth embodiment, the peening elements 69, Fig. 17, are located in an annular space 68 between a member 64 and the rims 67 of shallow cups 65. In a similar embodiment, the peening elements are located in annular grooves 75, Fig. 20, in members 72 secured face-to-face on the shaft 30.
